Visual Stress in the workplace

StressDoes paperwork affect your employees THIS way?

Visual Stress sometimes called Mears-Irlen or Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome is the experiencing of unpleasant visual symptoms when reading, especially for prolonged periods.

Research has shown that 15-20% of people suffer visual stress to some extent. They also tend to be hypersensitive to fluorescent lighting and flicker on computer monitors.

Symptoms include:

  • distortions of print.
  • loss of print clarity.
  • general vision iritation.

Visual stress can also cause sore eyes, headaches, frequent loss of place and impaired comprehension. Some people with Dyslexia may suffer from visual stress and so it is very important that those with Dyslexia are also screened for visual stress.

About Irlen

Irlen was founded and developed by educationalist and psychologist Helen Irlen. It is a type of visual perceptual problem. It is not an optical problem and does not need remediation by an optician. It is a difficulty with how the nervous system encodes and decodes visual information. Academic work and performance, behaviour, attention, ability to sit still and concentration can all be affected.

Distortions caused by the syndrome. Problems include seeing patterns in background, print moving, fading, disappearing, sparking or shimmering.

Case Study

Mrs. B. Bromsgrove:  Daughter L was experiencing difficulties in reading and spelling .The frustrations from this were put down to attention problems. She was becoming more reluctant to go to school, came home exhausted and in very low mood.

Homework was a nightmare and talented in music, she found sight reading almost impossible. When tested for stress on the nervous system she showed a high rating. Familial incidences of Dyslexia led the parents to LTS and we were able to test for both visual and phonological Dyslexia. When we placed the correct coloured overlays and L read the text the difference was immediate and the look of sheer relief and pleasure showed us that this was right for her.

“I could not believe the difference in or daughter’s speed and ease of reading, after the frustrations and reluctance to read. She now wears her lenses all the time and looks forward to school.”
